The government is to make use of flat rate payments in order to provide farmers with EU Dairy Fund money, it has been confirmed.

In total, around £26 million will be allocated to those based in England and devolved regions.

The period between October 2008 and September of last year will be covered by the funding, with a 0.2 pence flat rate set to apply to each litre of milk they managed to produce during this time.

Jim Fitzpatrick, the government''s minister for farming, believes that this should prove to be a fair system.

"We''ve agreed with the industry that a flat rate payment is the fairest way to help dairy farmers most affected by the drop in global dairy prices," he stated.

Last month, ministers also announced the launch of the new Uplands Entry Level Stewardship scheme, which aims to financially support a number of the country''s hill farmers.
