The development of a major new solar energy farm close to Ely is set to go ahead, following a planning decision made by the local council.
Ely Weekly News reported that the planning committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council has granted approval to a scheme which Abbey Renewables is overseeing.
The village of Wilburton will host the £13 billion 35-acre development, with spring 2011 likely to see the beginning of work on the site.
District and county councillor for Wilburton, Bill Hunt, told the news provider about some of the positive implications that may arise from the new solar farm.
He stated: "This solar farm will not only put East Cambridgeshire on the map for eco-friendliness but also bring huge benefits to the local community."
Land based close to Mingay Farm will be used for the Abbey Renewables project.
David Sutton, the chairman of Abbey Group Cambridgeshire, originally formed the company more than three decades ago.
