Cutting higher education places 'may be a mistake'

The coalition's proposals to reduce higher education places may prove to be an error, it is suggested.

It may prove a mistake for the coalition government to lower the amount of higher education places which are available to students in the future, according to one commentator.

Sally Hunt, the general secretary of the University and College Union (UCU), feels that a whole generation could be left behind by ministers' university plans.

She stated: "Rationing higher education, and making it more expensive, at a time when we have such a difficult job market makes little sense."

Ms Hunt made her remarks following the publication of Higher Education Statistics Agency research concerning higher education enrolments which were made during the 2009/10 period.

A yearly rise of four per cent was recorded by the organisation, in relation to the number of enrolments which were made by UK institutions.

The UCU is also getting behind protests which will be launched later this week in a bid to stop the government from getting rid of the education maintenance allowance.
