Young people need to ensure they have the right skills to secure a job after leaving education.

Young people in education across the UK have been advised that while academia plays an important part in getting a job, they should also focus on what transferable skills they can offer to businesses.

Denise Taylor, a career psychologist with amazingpeople.co.uk, said the recruiting process will often highlight certain traits that are desirable to employers, but it is often the things that can help individuals in any walk of life, such as the ability to listen or work as part of a team, that really make candidates stand out.

She commented: "They want people that have really good communication skills, they need to be able to write, they need to be able to work as part of a team."

Meanwhile, data obtained by the Labour Party recently revealed that funding for hundreds of Masters and PhD schemes across the UK could be pulled over the coming year.

Shadow universities minister Gareth Thomas argued that these cuts will have a "devastating" and "profound" impact on the depth and quality of advanced research in the UK in the future.
