Rural communities should be offered a greater level of financial support to develop more affordable housing, according to one expert.

The English Rural Housing Association''s operations director Martin Collett believes that the high cost of property in certain countryside regions is pushing younger house buyers away.

This trend could have wider implications for rural communities, he believes.

Mr Collett noted: "An impact, of course, is that employers might find it difficult to recruit somebody, and local services suffer because they are not being supported by younger people or younger households."

Meanwhile, the expert also feels that organisations such as parish councils should be given the chance to develop projects that could benefit home buyers of a younger age.

Earlier this month, the government''s rural advocate Dr Stuart Burgess sounded a warning to ministers about the problems that may arise if young people continue to move away from rural areas.
