A London barrister''s former wife has recently requested that the Court of Appeal overturn a maintenance decision made last year in the High Court.

David Vaughan QC and Philippa Vaughan divorced in 1985, with Mr Vaughan providing his ex-wife with annual maintenance payments of £27,175 from 1991 onwards, the Press Association has reported.

However, a High Court decision in 2009 saw a judge take into account Mr Vaughan''s retirement, bringing about an end to the yearly payments and deciding against a lump sum payment.

According to the news provider, in the appeal which was heard earlier this month, Philippa Vaughan was seeking a lump sum of £341,000, although the three Court of Appeal judges opted to make their ruling at a later date.

Mr Vaughan has subsequently remarried following the couple''s split.

When it comes to divorce, the Office for National Statistics recently revealed that 5.5 per cent fewer were granted between 2007 and 2008 in the UK.
