A major new campaign has been launched by organisations including the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) in a bid to extend the availability of broadband services in rural parts of the UK.

Named Final Third First, it is hoped that the initiative will encourage ministers to enable people in less built-up regions to benefit from the government''s online services before 2012 comes to a close.

Dr Charles Trotman, head of rural business development at the CLA, suggests that the government''s existing broadband targets are already quite ambitious.

"Those living in areas known as the ''final third'' still receive no proper access to broadband, putting them at a severe disadvantage," he commented.

"This campaign calls for faster action on the progress already made."

Ministers recently launched the Broadband Delivery UK body, which aims to oversee the development of the country''s Universal Service Commitment in the coming few years.
