General Data Protection Regulation for Employers: Happy (or not?) First Birthday!

May 14 2019

Event time:
8:30

Location:
The Møller Centre, Cambridge

For many it seems that at the blink of an eye, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is coming up to its one year anniversary in May 2019. Whether this is cause for celebration, concern or contemplation will depend on the individual employer. However, one common theme is that there is much to be said and learnt from looking back at the first year of the GDPR.

Taylor Vinters invites you to our event, which we will focus on the common and key areas our clients have found particularly challenging and the frequently asked questions by businesses when applying the new data rules to HR data processes and systems. We will be sharing our insights and will specifically focus on the practical steps and solutions to help employers with compliance and to better understand and manage the risks involved. Some of the topics and themes we will be covering include:

  • Lawful basis for processing – to include the processing of special category data and introduction of legitimate interest assessment tool.
  • Data retention.
  • Data rights of staff – increase in data subject access requests but also exercising other rights.
  • Employee monitoring programmes (such as IT, vehicles and drug and alcohol testing).
  • Criminal records checks, references and other staff vetting.
  • Data breaches. Increase in cyber and data security incidents. What is a breach?  When does it need to be reported?  Approach of ICO to breaches. Vicarious liability of employers.
  • Core HR documentation – employment contracts, consultancy agreements, data protection (and other) policies, and privacy notices.
  • Change in workplace culture, including ongoing staff training.

We will be concluding our seminar with a look at the impact of Brexit and what this means for the transfer of employee data around international organisations.

This session will be led by Rachel Ashwood and Razia Begum.
