An employer should only collect and further process personal data where it has an appropriate legal ground for doing so.

One of the six potential legal grounds is where data is being processed because it is necessary to achieve one or more legitimate interests of the employer (or a third party). However, this can only be used where the employer is satisfied that this interest doesn’t outweigh any privacy concerns of relevant employees.
